What is Kundalini Kriya Yoga – Pran Apan Yagya

Shiva Gorakshanath Babaji

There never has been or will be a time when man’s own nature shall cease to demand his best and foremost attention. The science of Yoga commends itself to the foremost minds of east and west. So vital is this inner science for the evolution of human consciousness that besides it the greatest of human achievements pale into insignificance.

The science of Kundalini Kriya Yoga pranayam offers the inhaled pranic breath into the exhaled apanic breath and vice versa. By this process the yogi neutralizes the two life currents of pran and apan. This results in the arresting of decay and growth in the body. This is done by rejuvenating the blood and body cells with life energy (prana) that has been distilled from the breath and moved into the spine and the brain. The Kriya yogi arrests all bodily decay, thereby quieting the breath & heart. This renders the purifying actions of the breath and heart unnecessary as they gradually slow down through persevering practice.

The Bhagavad Gita makes a mention of this science in chapter 4 verse 29. The Kundalini Kriya Yoga pranayam called the pran-apanic fire rite by the Yogis, teaches man to untie the cord of breath that binds our soul to the bodily cage. Thus releasing the soul to fly & expand into the superconscious skies of omnipresent spirit and come back at will into the little body cage. No flight or fancy this but a true experiencing of divine bliss.

Pranayam is derived from its Sanskrit roots, Prana (life) and Ayama (control). So Pranayama is therefore life-force control and not breath control. In the larger sense the whole world is filled with the universal life-force energy called Prana. Everything is a differentiation of the modes of expression of this universal force. Therefore universal Prana is Para-Prakriti (pure Nature). This eminent energy is derived from the infinite spirit and permeates and sustains the universe.

Individual Prana is an intelligent force but has no consciousness in the empirical nor transcendental sense. The Soul is the conscious unit and Prana is its basis. The consciousness through mind ego dictates terms and prana follows the dictate. Neither grossly material nor purely spiritual prana borrows from the soul its power of activating the body.

There are two main currents in the body. One is that of prana which flows from the coccyx to the point between the eyebrows. The nature of this life is current is soothing;

In introverts the devotees attention during sleep and the wakeful state, and in meditation unites the soul with the spirit in the third ventricle of the brain called the Shivanetra third eye.

The other main current is that of apana which flows from the third eye to the coccyx.

This downward flowing extrovert current distributes itself through the coccyx center to the motor-sensory nerves. This keeps mans consciousness delusively tied to the body.

The apana current is restless and engrosses man in sensory experiences.

(Bhagavad Gita, chapter 6 verse 46) “Greater is the Yogi than body disciplining ascetics, greater even than the followers of wisdom’s path. Greater than the path of action. Be thou Arjuna a Yogi!”

Kundalini Kriya Yoga pranayama arrests bodily decay connected with apana, manifest in the exhaling breath, by fresh inhalations of life-force (Prana) distilled from the inhaling breath. This prana enables the devotee to do away with the illusion of decay & mutation; he then realizes that his body is made of lifetrons of congealed light. The body of the Kriya Yogi is recharged with extra energy distilled from the breath and energized by the tremendous dynamo of energy generated in the spine, the decay of body tissues decreases. This ultimately makes unnecessary the blood cleansing functions of the heart. The heart pump becomes quiet owing to the non-pumping of venous blood and exhalation & inhalation of breath are evened out. The life energy unites in the currents in the spine. The light of pure prana scintillates from the six charkas to all the bodily cells keeping them in a spiritually magnetized condition.

Kundalini Kriya Yoga is referred to obliquely in yoga treatises as Kevali pranayama or Kevali Kumbhaka. This is the true pranayama that has transcended the necessity for inhalation (puraka) and exhalation (Rechaka); breath is transmuted into inner life-force currents, under the complete control of the mind. When the breath stops effortlessly without either rechaka or puraka that is Kevali Kumbaka. (Hatha Yoga Pratipika II-73). Of the various stages of pranayama (ie breathlessness), Kevali is extolled by adept Yogis as the best or highest (NB Kundalini Kriya Yoga is not breath control but lifeforce control). When one get to the advanced state of Shiva Shakti Kriya; the breath ceases. Duly the cool ascending pranic current & warm descending apanic current are felt flowing in the sushumna nadi (spinal cord). This is an avasta (state) of Kevali Kumbaka.

Though in principle it may be equated with Kundalini Kriya Yoga, Kevali pranayama is not as explicit as the specific Kundalini Kriya Yoga science and techniques expounded by Shiv Goraksha Babaji, the Mahavatar.

(Gita pg 306 Vol I, Yogananda) “The Lord surrounded mans soul first with an idea body. Then he encased the idea body with a very subtle light, the astral body. The third or final encasement was the electroatomic dream body, the illusion of a fleshly form. The Gita advises us to practice pranayama (Life-force control) to enable us to realize that we are not made of flesh; but of life-force condensed from the thought of God!

Electro-Lifetronic – Sattva Guna – Luminosity – Ananda Kosh – Causal body

Electro Protonic – Rajo Guna – Activity – Mano Vaigymic – Astral body

Electro Atomic – Tamo Guna – Inertia – Physical body

Kundalini Kriya is a process of converting breath into life-force and realizing the body as light. By the perfect performance of Kriya 1,728 times in one posture (ie at one time) and by practicing 20,736 Kriyas a devotee can reach a state of Samadhi (God contact). But Kriya cannot be practiced so many times by a beginner. When the body & mind of the Yogi are prepared to accommodate the high voltage of so much Kundalini Kriya Yoga, his Guru will advise him that he is ready for the experience of Samadhi. If the Kriyas are broken into several sittings no harm; it will just take longer.

Kundalini Kriya Yoga: A process for Magnetic Oxidation

In the practice of Kundalini Kriya Yoga, the will and imagination transmute the oxygen of breath into life energy and blend it into the spiritual currents of the spine. In Kriya Yoga, when you inhale and exhale continuously, oxygen is quickly converted into life energy that recharges the entire body, especially the blood and the lungs with vital sustenance. As you focus your eyes and willpower between the eyebrows and strongly visualize the circulation of life breath Prana & Apana, up & down the spine respectively, both positive and negative poles are established on the opposite sides of the hollow spinal tube, between the Agya Chakra and the Muladhar. The magnetic pull between the two poles brings the actual circulation of the Sushumna current, and awakens the subtle layers of the Kundalini. Such must be your absorption that as you inhale you become the cool ascending breath word of Prana, transmuting the atoms of oxygen into life energy in the spine. As you exhale, you become the warm descending breath word of Apana burning the carbon-dioxide and the venous blood of the body.

The inhalation exhalation of Parana Apana is the true Prana-Apana Yagna (the Fire Rite of the Nath Yogi). As the positive and negative poles are established in the cerebrospinal column the spine becomes magnetized and draws all sensory electric Prana to the spinal reservoirs of lotuses. By Pratyahara the reversal of life currents from the senses occur resulting in the disconnection of our senses from their external objects. This introverts the mind from outer distractions, and enables it to concentrate fully on one’s Divine Indweller, ultimately leading to a state of Kevali Kumbak. Then the spiritual body is seen as the five pointed Soul Star of Pranic light in the third eye, penetrating which one enters Samadhi – The realization of Cosmic Consciousness, also called Niranjan and Kaivalya in the Nath tradition.

Maha Avatar Babaji : The Adi Buddha of Compassion

Babaji Gorakshanath

Mahavatar Goraksha Nath Babaji, the Adi Buddha of compassion has given to the Kaliyug (the dark age) the divine alchemy of Shiva Shakti Kundalini Kriya Yoga which exercises a double action to hasten the evolution of the self-soul. The upward life breath of Prana expands soul-consciousness, the downward life breath of Apana burns past evil Karmas before they ripen into fruit. This Prana-Apana burns the seeds of potential Karma, evolves and transforms the mind into consciousness.

Yogavatar Krishna says in the Gita (ch: V. verse 27-28):

” The meditation expert (Muni) becomes eternally free from external phenomenon by concentrating his gaze between the eyebrows; and by neutralizing the uneven currents of Prana and Apana flowing within the nostrils. Such a yogi transforms his sensory mind, his intellect and frees himself from the Karma of fear, anger and desire.”

In the shadow of words may Shiva Shakti Kundalini Kriya Yoga be dimly perceived, but more beautifully, in the light of its living may it be expressed. Kundalini Kriya Yoga is a way of life and much more. It is the divine alchemy which transforms the mind and merges it into the ineffable presence of the SELF who dwells within all of us. Whether we call this presence Krishna, Christ, Shiva, Buddha or Allah is a question of mere dialect. The essential fact is becoming the Presence, becoming the peace that passeth all understanding.

Kundalini Kriya Yoga – The Love Phenomenon

As the Kriya Yoga deals with the highest evolution of man it is rightly called the Science of all Sciences. Nevertheless it has its roots in the soil of love, without which it flowers not. We do the Kriya Yoga in sound and in motion, we are so immersed that we become the sound and the motion. The sound must be made with Love and Joy, the motion becomes the emotion of Love.

The upward and downward motion in the spine generates tremendous Love and the spine is spiritually magnetized. The Yogi becomes the process of Yoga. The Yogi becomes the Yoga. The pilgrim, the path and the goal become One … Love.

Kundalini Kriya Yoga reveals by practice not belief. Through experienced realization comes Awakening. Be still and know yourself as Atman. Amongst the forms and ways of Yoga, Kundalini Kriya Yoga is peerless.

Wings to Freedom : Kundalini Kriya Yoga Journey of the Soul

Hamsa Yoga, the Way Of The White Swan Is the Evolution Of Human Consciousness, the most comprehensive enterprise ever under-taken by humanity, besides which the greatest of human achievements pale into insignificance. This process is yoga which commends itself to the foremost minds of the East & the West. In the human brain exists the Lateral Ventricals in the shape of a “Swan In Flight”, with its wing like ventricles thrust towards the forehead and its head pointing to the back as though the Swan is flying faster than light back to the future. When a Hamsa Yogi, through meditation & pranayam, activates the Kundalini energy, then these ventricles in the brain open up. The two petals in the Agya Chakra open. The yogi, at this stage, experiences Hamsa Consciousness, being breathed by the divine Indweller.

The Sushumna channel in the spinal cord is the highway through which the Kundalini energy travels and the evolution of consciousness takes place. Kundalini is the Kinetic Energy remaining after the completion of the Universe. This residual bioelectric force lies as light/sound vibrations at the root of the spinal cord. To avail of it for one’s own evolution and realization is the birthright of every human soul.

As the Hamsanath Yogi progresses in his meditation, the third eye opens up in the Agya Chakra and he goes into the Sarvikalpa Consciousness. Then by further practice, he penetrates the Star of the Eye and expands to the Paramhansanath Yogi’s state of Nirvikalpa Consciousness, dwelling in the Cave of Brahma*, the brain’s third ventricle. Then his awareness expands beyond the I-ness of humanity to settle in the lateral ventricles of the brain, where he becomes the Siddhanath Yogi. The mighty Hamsa Soul then wins its Wings to Freedom, as the subtle fibers of his Corona Radiata light up with Divine effulgence he takes flight into Cosmic Consciousness attaining the state of Avadhootnath Yogi. He then experiences the total Divinity of and beyond Creation, gaining the ultimate knowledge of ‘Tat Tvam Asi’ That Thou Art. The Yogi then merges into Niranjan, the final Nirvana, having attained the enlightenment of the Krishna and the Christ. This Avadhootnath Yogi returns to the world no more. If, under rare circumstances, he ever does, it will be the descent of divinity as the Avatarnath Yogi.
